• How to Calculate How Much Flooring You Need

    Published on 08 Jan 2026

Before ordering your flooring, it’s important to calculate the correct quantity to avoid running short during installation.

    Step 1: Measure your room
Measure the length and width of the room in metres. Multiply these two numbers to calculate the total square metres (sqm).
    Example: your room is 4.2m wide x 3.6m long = 15.12sqm.

Step 2: Check coverage per box
Each flooring range indicates the number of square metres included in one box. Find this figure for the product you’ve chosen.

    Step 3: Allow for wastage
Each range requires a wastage allowance to cover cutting, offcuts, and installation adjustments. This is typically around 10%, though it can vary by product and layout. Add this onto your total square metres before calculating boxes.
    Example: 15.12sqm + 10% = 16.63sqm.

Step 4: Calculate the number of boxes needed
Divide your total square metres (including wastage) by the square metres per box. Example: 16.63 ÷ 1.669 = 9.96 boxes.
Always round up to the nearest whole box. In this case, you would order 10 boxes.

Taking the time to measure accurately and allow for wastage will help ensure a smooth installation and a professional finish.
